Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, was elected on May 8, 2025, becoming the 267th sovereign pontiff of the Catholic Church. Originally from Chicago, he was the first American pope in history, marking a turning point in papal tradition. Before his election, he served as a missionary in Peru for more than 20 years and was prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops at the Vatican. His election came after four votes during the conclave, succeeding Pope Francis, who died on April 21, 2025. In his first speech, he called for peace and unity, paying tribute to his predecessor and expressing gratitude to his former diocese in Peru. His choice of the name Leo XIV pays homage to Leo XIII, known for his commitment to social justice.
