The Israelites were enslaved in Egypt. They worked hard under the scorching sun to build cities. The Pharaoh forced them to make bricks and build walls. They had neither rest nor freedom, and suffered cruel treatment. This period marks the beginning of the history of the liberation of Passover. It is this memory that we evoke at the beginning of the story of the Exodus.
